Even before electric cars are available in Singapore, City Square Mall has made provisions for them in its carpark. The new mall at the junction of Serangoon Road and Kitchener Road, which opened in mid-September, has four priority lots for such cars in its basement carpark. The mall also has 10 hybrid car lots and 12 family parking lots. These are 25 per cent wider and are for those with prams or young children.

The reason why these special provisions are made is part of the mall's initiative as Singapore's first eco-mall to encourage its shoppers to choose eco-friendly vehicles by providing priority parking for them.

By September 2010, electric cars will hit Singapore shores in a big way. Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi will bring in electric cars for a three-year infrastructure study that will cost the Singapore Government $20 million.
